Principal Policy Officer, International Cooperation (INCO), Research Directorate General (DG
RTD), European Commission, Brussels, Belgium
Dr. Nauen holds a PhD in marine ecology from Kiel University, Germany. She worked in FAO's Fisheries Department starting in the late 1970s in relation to the species identification programme (biodiversity) and on pollution issues (consumer safety levels in and advisories). In 1986, she joined the European Commission, where she worked in development cooperation and, since 1999, in international science cooperation.
Major achievements comprise EU-ACP policy dialogue around the development of an ACP-EU Fisheries Research Initiative associated also with the development of FishBase, the largest web-based archive on global scientific knowledge on all fishes and several major conferences setting more integrated research agendas focused on sustainability. In the same vein, she spent several years dedicated to integrated water research. In this context, she supported a major international review of 10 years of international water research co-sponsored by the EU led to new insights on how to bring research more effectively into the policy arena. Biodiversity and sustainability research and how to increase its impact in societal problem solving have been constant concerns in Dr. Nauen's professional work and feature in her publications. She now focuses on developing S&T relations between Europe and South America, where addressing risks associated with extreme events are high on the (bi-)regional agenda.
