IRIDeS - International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University

One year after the catastrophic disaster in 2011, Tohoku University launched the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) in April 2012. Together with collaborating organizations from many countries and with broad areas of specializations, the IRIDeS conducts world-leading research on natural disaster science and disaster mitigation. Based on the lessons learnt from the 2011 Great East Japan (Tohoku) earthquake and tsunami disaster, IRIDeS aims to become a world centre for the study of the disasters and disaster mitigation, learning from and building upon past lessons in disaster management from Japan and around the world. Throughout, the IRIDeS will contribute to on-going recovery/reconstruction efforts in the affected areas, conducting action-oriented research, and pursuing effective disaster management to build sustainable and resilient societies, the IRIDeS innovates the past paradigm of Japan’s and world’s disaster management to catastrophic natural disasters, hence to become a foundation stone of disaster mitigation management and sciences.

PEP - Public Empowerment Policies for Crisis Management

In the booth from the PEP project (Public Empowerment Policies) you can experience some best practices showing what the EU-funded research project of PEP is all about. We investigated best practices and key enablers enhancing public resilience by conducting desk studies, interviews and an online international expert questionnaire. We will also show you experiences with and challenges of a community approach involving the public in crisis management. All the knowledge we gathered during this project will be extracted by a new WIKI website. This website and an online discussion will be launched during the conference and will be shown in the PEP-booth as well.

UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Operating at the interface between education, science, the social sciences, culture and communication, UNESCO has a vital role to play in constructing a global culture of disaster risk reduction. The Organization is engaged in the conceptual shift in thinking away from Post-Disaster reaction to pre-disaster action.

Through its broad mandate and expertise, UNESCO is helping countries to reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and build their capacity to cope with disasters. Furthermore, UNESCO provides to governments practical and scientific advice on disaster risk reduction and a forum to work together to find solutions in this area.

UNESCO has many programmes in place that deal in one way or another with the study of natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, droughts, tsunamis, etc.) and the mitigation of their effects. These programmes help us understand the mechanisms of natural hazards and to analyse why some of these hazards turn into disasters.
